1 Open Publishing (Newswire)
Indymedia Canarias is a web site dedicated to open publishing by means of which any person, organisation or collective is invited to publish news, analysis, calls to participate in events, reflection, opinion, artistic works or anything else they may consider appropriate. Contributions may be made in the form of text, images, audio and videos and may be anonymous if so desired. Indymedia Canarias encourages the use of open source formats and protocols, enabling data to be freely shared, since our guiding principles emphasise the promotion of open software and the technological emancipation of the individual in every sense. Simultaneously, anyone who so desires may choose to comment on the contributions published on the site in order to express their point of view, provide complementary information, raise questions, or for any other reason they like.
Indymedia provides the medium; its users provide the content. Responsibility for the content published will be assumed by the authors and/or contributors. (see point 7: Authors' Rights).
2 Themes of Contributions
Indymedia Canarias suggests that contributions and comments should be related to the objectives of this project. The editorial collective has defined the categories, axes or zooms which may be considered as providing a framework within which to locate, or a perspective from which to view, themes which we come to find ourselves dealing with here. These are continually open to change: suggestions are welcome.
3 Editorial Workgroup
Management and maintenance of the editorial aspects of the site will be handled by a group of people which shall be open to anyone who at any time may join us by subscribing to our mailing list and introducing themselves. From that moment they become another equal among equals and may propose editorials and participate in the development of those proposed. Our methodology is to float ideas and work on their development between us until we arrive at a text which has been consensed upon by the collective with complete transparancy.
Among the editorial collective's tasks is that of providing content and maintaining the editorial column - the central column - of the site's main page, in which we will attempt to cover the most relevant contemporary issues, as far as we are able, applying the following modes of operation (among others which may emerge):
Publishing 'editorial' articles produced by or for the editorial group;
Publishing articles 'promoted' from the open publishing (newswire) section;
Publishing summaries of material contributed to the open publishing (newswire) section and/or other places, with links;
Publishing material offered by (and accepted from) third parties.
4 Site Management Workgroup
The administration of the site takes place on various levels, ranging from the purely technical to editorial issues. Technical administrative tasks require a certain level of knowledge about programming, servers, databases, etc. An editor's tasks are more concerned with the use of the site: adding/modifying editorials, purging the newswire of duplicates or of contributions which do not satisfy our criteria, etc. Any member of the collective who so desires may be an editor or administrator, as long as they enjoy the confidence of the collective (we cannot simply provide passwords to allcomers).
5 Unacceptable Contributions
Although open publishing is one of the main objectives of Indymedia, the editorial collective of Indymedia Canarias may remove contributions which do not respect the principles of the project - in particular, those which are found to be discriminatory, insulting, or which gratuitously incriminate individuals identifiable by name or other personal data; those which are no more than adverts and/or publicity for commercial products or for political parties; and those which are deliberately false. We will also remove others such as those which are spam, repeats or which have serious technical problems.
6 Local Nodes
Indymedia Canarias conceives of organising itself as a network of local nodes, thus reflecting the different island communities of which this archipelago is composed, such as shall develop in the degree to which activists from the different islands get their act together.
7 Authors' Rights
Whoever contributes material to the site will be able to select a 'licence' under which they publish, specifying which rights are granted and which are reserved, by choosing among copyleft and creative commons licences, or by contributing to the public domain.
Indymedia Canarias accepts no responsibility for material published on this site, except for that which appears in the central (editorial) column. All responsibility for verifying the right to publish contributions rests with the contributor. In the act of publishing on this site the contributor, on the basis of the licence selected, will specify whether or not, and how the material may be redistributed.
8 Rhizomatic Cooperative Autonomy
Indymedia Canarias is an independent media centre which functions autonomously, while respecting the principles and objectives of the Indymedia network. At the same time, Indymedia Canarias plays an active part in the cross-frontier project that is Indymedia Madiaq/Estrecho and will collaborate with other nodes of the Indymedia network or external collectives with which we share objectives in common. Among our objectives is that of providing increased visibility to what's happening on the African continent, and to establish special relations with the Indymedia which already exist and which will undoubtedly continue to emerge on that continent.
